In the 1980’s, Dr. Norman Rosenthal, with his colleagues from the National Institute of Mental Health, began to carry out research on light therapy and showed for the first time that it was possible to treat this seasonal effect through exposure to artificial light.
The modern science of light therapy was inaugurated by Niels Ryberg Finsen, a Danish-physician, (1860–1904), who received the 1903 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, for his pioneering work on the therapeutic and physiological effects of light treatment from artificial light sources.
Light therapy dates back to the ancient Greeks when it was known that exposure to light, or heliotherapy, could be beneficial to health. Today, we know that one benefit of exposure to light is the skin's production of vitamin D, one of the healing vitamins that are essential to good health.
